Here’s how to fix focus as a founder

Black Belt Startup

Welcome to the Dojo!

Most entrepreneurs don’t struggle with focus because they lack discipline.

They struggle because they’re focusing the wrong way.

And the harder they try to fix it—with more structure, more tools, more rigid routines—the worse it gets.

In my latest video, I share 6 principles from martial arts and mindfulness that helped me go from scattered effort to consistent execution—and they’ve made a big difference for many of the founders I’ve worked with, including neurodivergent professionals.

On the Mat

  1. Let’s Train: I’ve seen this pattern: scattered, overwhelmed, and stuck between ideas and execution
  2. Ask Feras: “I feel like I’m constantly busy but not making real progress. What’s wrong?”
  3. Sharpen the Blade: [New Video] 6 Principles For Focus and Mindfulness in Entrepreneurship

Let's Train

Over the last 20+ years building businesses—and working with a wide range of founders—I’ve seen this pattern play out again and again.

Especially with capable, experienced professionals. People who are smart, driven, and technically strong… but still feel:

  • Scattered
  • Overwhelmed
  • Stuck between ideas and execution

For some—especially neurodivergent entrepreneurs—this isn’t just frustrating. It’s confusing.

Because the usual advice doesn’t help.

“Just be more disciplined.”
“Stick to a routine.”
“Use this productivity system.”

But here’s the problem:

Focus isn’t just about effort, it’s about how you direct your attention. And if that’s off, no amount of discipline will fix it.

A Different Way to Think About Focus

Instead of forcing focus, you need to train it. That’s where the principles I share in this week’s video come in.

They’re drawn from martial arts, mindfulness, and years of building and scaling businesses.

A few that stand out:

  • Beginner’s Mind
    • Stay open—even when you think you already know. That’s where growth happens.
  • Relaxed Alertness
    • Don’t just go deep. Learn to zoom in and out. That’s how you make better decisions.
  • Learn As You Go
    • Overplanning keeps you stuck. Action creates clarity.
  • Systems Over Willpower
    • If your structure is weak, your focus will be inconsistent.

These aren’t productivity hacks, they’re foundational ways to think and operate.

And once they click, you’ll notice something:

You don’t just feel more focused… you make better decisions, move faster, and execute more consistently.

🔥 The Challenge

“I feel like I’m constantly busy but not making real progress. What’s wrong?”

🛠️ What I Told Them

That’s usually a focus issue, not a workload issue. You’re either spending energy on the wrong things—or switching too often without clear direction.

What I do is identify the one “big rock” I need to move over the next week or two, and then deliberately allocate 70%+ of my time to activities that move that forward.

Everything else gets deprioritized.
