The Business in Every Headline

Black Belt Startup

Good Morning!

What’s the real cost of a bad hire?

Three months in: $24K spent. Zero pipeline. No clients. That was me… in my first startup. I had convinced my cofounder to invest in a dedicated salesperson. He had the résumé, the polish, the pitch... everything except results.

Firing him was painful and embarrassing. I felt like I’d let my cofounder down. And honestly, I wanted to blame the hire. But deep down, I knew the bigger issue: I didn’t know how to hire.

But A-players can be found. The key is having a smart, structured approach, grounded in both people and financial logic. That’s what I break down in this new article for the team at Burkland for Business.

Give it a read and let me know what you think.

Let's Train

The Business Hiding Inside Every Headline

On Thursday, August 7, 2025, sweeping U.S. tariffs against multiple trading partners came into effect. They’ll ripple through the global economy, impacting companies, supply chains, and consumers. Supporters see them as a way to fix trade deficits and boost domestic manufacturing; critics warn of economic fallout.

Tariffs themselves aren’t my area of expertise (though I’m always happy to debate the politics over coffee or Zoom :)). What I want to highlight is this: most people read headlines like this, grumble, and move on.

Yes—governments, big tech (IMO), and other responsible parties have a duty to act in the public interest. And yes—macro changes like tariffs, regulations, or new technologies can hit livelihoods hard.

But at the end of the day, your future is still your responsibility.

These shifts often create pockets of new demand, and where there’s demand, there’s an opening for a consulting and service business to step in. Train your eye to spot the gap, and you can turn disruption into your advantage.

When a tariff hits, businesses don’t just “adjust”; they scramble, they panic.

And they start asking urgent questions like:

  • “How do we restructure our supply chain fast?”
  • “How do I find alternative suppliers in tariff-free or low-tariff countries?”
  • “Is there a cheaper way to handle compliance?”
  • “What’s my public communication strategy?”

These aren’t just problems, they’re entry points for new consultants.

Especially for people like you sharp thinkers who just haven’t been shown where to look.

See, you don’t need to be a tariff expert, you just need to understand a powerful 3-step pattern:

1. Watch for shifts (in rules, tools, or behaviors)

Every regulation, every tech rollout, every headline, it’s a signal.

  • A new privacy law? Startups now need help with data privacy compliance.
  • A new AI tool? Companies need someone to help them integrate it into their workflow.
  • A supply chain shakeup like a tariff? Businesses need smarter ways to adapt, fast.

If you pay attention to what’s changing instead of what’s trending, you’ll start seeing consulting opportunities most people miss.

Pro Tip: Set a Google Alert for your industry keywords + “regulation” or “update.” Browse Reddit forums, listen to earnings calls, read the comment sections.

Trends aren’t hiding, they’re leaking out of every conversation.

2. Tie your skills to the pain that shift causes

Don’t lead with “what you do.” Lead with who’s in pain and how you relieve it.

Let’s say you’re good with systems and operations.

When a tariff hits, companies may need to rework their vendor logistics or rethink fulfillment.

That’s your opening, you don’t need to say:

“I help with operational strategy.”

Instead, say:

“I help small import/export businesses adapt to regulation changes without losing speed or profit.”

Make the pain visible, then show how your skills make it go away.

3. Offer clarity in a moment of chaos

When things shift, people don’t want complexity, they want calm, they want someone to walk into the fog and say:

“I’ve got you. Here’s what we’re going to do.”

The value of a consultant isn't always expertise, sometimes, it’s simply helping someone feel less alone in a confusing moment.

Clarity = $Currency.

When you’re the one who can untangle the mess, you earn the seat at the table.

You don’t need a fancy website, you don’t need a huge network, you don’t even need to call yourself a consultant yet.

You just need to learn how to spot the shift. and map your skill to the pain it creates.

That’s exactly what I teach you in the new video I just released:

Build something that gives you freedom, flexibility, and control on your own terms.

If I Had Just $100 to Get My Next Client…

If I took away your marketing budget and gave you just $100 to win your next client… where would you spend it?

🔥 The Challenge

In my early days, I didn’t have a big ad budget. Every dollar had to work hard. I needed a way to find clients, build trust, and sharpen my pitch, without burning through cash.

💡 What I Learned the Hard Way

Nothing has beaten in-person networking. The ROI is unmatched, not just in sales, but in skills, connections, and opportunities.

🛠️ What I Told Them

Get in the room. Attend industry events, local meetups, conferences, and any other gathering where your potential clients, partners, and peers congregate. You’ll:

  • Meet leads face-to-face and build trust faster.
  • Practice and refine your pitch in real conversations.
  • Learn from others in your field (and your competitors).
  • Meet future hires, suppliers, partners, or even investors.

Done right, almost any marketing channel can work, but in-person networking builds the kind of relationships that keep paying you back for years.

This one means everything to me.

Watch the full video now and take the first real step toward turning your skills into a business.

Don’t save this for “someday.” Watch it. Apply it. Start!

Why I Made This

It took me nearly seven years to reach seven figures, not because I wasn’t capable, but because I didn’t have a map. I made every mistake in the book: unclear offers, mis-targeted outreach, ineffective delivery systems.
