Is Ghosting the New Normal Even for Business?

Black Belt Startup

Welcome to the Dojo!

I rarely talk about business at home. But now that my kids are adults—and see my content online (and are kind enough to like it 😊)—those conversations have started to flow.

After I recently wrote about how surprised I am when vendors go silent, my daughter said, “Dad, you don’t get it—ghosting is everywhere these days.”

She’s right. Ghosting has become normalized in personal life, and I’m seeing the same pattern in business. But if you’re serious about building a sustainable, profitable business, don’t fall into that trap. Responsiveness can be your biggest differentiator.

  1. Let’s Train: Responsiveness isn’t just polite—it’s profitable.

Let's Train

Responsiveness isn’t just polite—it’s profitable.

I used to think ghosting was a dating app thing. But lately, I’m seeing it everywhere in business.

In the past couple of months, I’ve had five vendors or consultants go completely silent—people I was ready to pay, at the rate they proposed. Smart people, solid pitches
and then radio silence after a few basic follow-up questions.

And that’s what gets me. They’re not losing deals because of talent—it’s because of a lack of responsiveness, which might be the most underrated business skill today.

Am I just old school? 🙂 Is this a generational thing? Or are people simply less hungry for business?

To fellow entrepreneurs—especially those early in the journey—I’ll say this:

Responsiveness:

  • Builds trust before money changes hands
  • Isn’t about personality—it’s a habit you train and a muscle you build
  • Helps you stand out and win more deals

I get it. Life gets busy. We’ve all got a lot going on. But if a prospect has to chase you, it’s already too late.

That’s why it stood out when a vendor recently emailed to apologize for delays. They owned the issue, explained what went wrong, and shared how they were fixing it. Professional. Human. Rare.

(And yes, I’ll share that vendor’s email—redacted for privacy—because it’s a great example of taking ownership the right way.)

I’ll leave you with this, according to HubSpot:

  • 75% of customers say response speed is the #1 factor in a great experience
  • 60% say quick replies and solutions drive repeat business

So if you’re a founder, consultant, or freelancer, make responsiveness part of your culture. Because while everyone else is chasing new tools and tactics, the ones who simply show up fast and follow through will keep winning business—and keeping clients.

đŸ”„ The Challenge

This time someone asked this on Reddit “What’s the biggest cheat code you’ve discovered that made everything easier?”

I get this question a lot—what’s the secret sauce, the formula, the one thing that makes success simple?

đŸ› ïž What I Told Them

The real “cheat code” (that most people don’t want to admit) is
working really hard. Once that’s in place, the next one is simple but takes discipline: tackle the big, tough problems first, and resist the temptation to hide in the small stuff.

Dishwasher → 8-Figure CEO | 5 Lessons That Changed My Life

In 2019, I sold my 8-figure marketing analytics agency to Dentsu, the world’s 4th largest media conglomerate.

But before that life-changing exit, I was a broke dishwasher in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In this video I share the 5 life lessons that took me from rock bottom to building, scaling, and selling a multi-million-dollar business:

  1. Why the people you spend time with shape your future
  2. The power of commitment (and why most people get it wrong)
  3. Why success isn’t a straight line (and how to bounce back from failure)
  4. How to escape mediocrity and find work you love
  5. Why hard work—done the right way—always pays off

If you’re an entrepreneur, business owner, or anyone who feels stuck, this story will give you a roadmap to change your life.
